but this was not suffered. Edmund urged her remaining where she was with an earnestness which she could not resist, and she was left on the bench to think with pleasure of her cousin's care, but with great regret that she was not stronger. She watched them till they had turned the corner, and listened till all sound of them had ceased.¡¡¡¡CHAPTER X ¡¡¡¡ A quarter of an hour, twenty minutes, passed away, and Fanny was still thinking of Edmund, Miss Crawford,

She listened, and at length she heard; she heard voices and feet approaching; but she had just satisfied herself that it was not those she wanted, when Miss Bertram, Mr. Rushworth, and Mr. Crawford issued from the same path which she had trod herself, and were before her.

This much-enduring man had succeeded in banishing chewing-gum after a long and stormy war, and had made a bonfire of the confiscated novels and newspapers, had suppressed a private post office, had forbidden distortions of the face, nicknames, and caricatures, and done all that one man could do to keep half-a-hundred rebellious girls in order. so, especially to nervous gentlemen, with tyrannical tempers, and no more talent for teaching than Dr. Blimber. Mr. Davis knew any quantity of Greek, Latin, Algebra, and ologies of all sorts, so he was called a fine teacher, and manners, morals, feelings, and examples were not considered of any particular importance. It was a most unfortunate moment for denouncing Amy, and Jenny knew it. Mr. Davis had evidently taken his coffee too strong that morning; there was an east wind, which always affected his neuralgia; and his pupils had not done him the credit which he felt he deserved: therefore, to use the expressive, if not elegant, language of a schoolgirl, `he was as nervous as a witch, and as cross as a bear'. The word `limes' was like fire to powder; his yellow face flushed, and he rapped on his desk with an energy which made jenny skip to her seat with unusual rapidity.

"Let me see…. I flew. Got here on the Saturday before Christmas - that would be the 21st."
"You flew straight from Majorca?"
"Yes. Left at five in the morning and got here midday."
"And you left?"
"I flew back on the following Friday, the 27th."
"Thank you."

"I hope not, Mr. Crackenthorpe."
Inspector Bacon merely looked disapproving.
"There would be a remarkable absence of peace and good will about such an action, don't you agree?"
Cedric addressed this question to Inspector Bacon who merely grunted. Inspector Craddock said politely:
"Well, thank you, Mr. Crackenthorpe. That will be all."
"And what do you think of him?" Craddock asked as Cedric shut the door behind him.
Bacon grunted again.

Mrs. McGillicuddy spoke to her twice before Miss Marple answered.
"You're getting deaf, Jane."
"Just a little, perhaps. People do not seem to me to enunciate their words as clearly as they used to do. But it wasn't that I didn't hear you. I'm afraid I wasn't paying attention."
"I just asked about the trains to London to-morrow. Would the afternoon be all right? I'm going to Margaret's and she isn't expecting me before teatime."
"I wonder, Elspeth, if you would mind going up by the 12.15? We could have an early lunch."
"Of course and –” Miss Marple went on, drowning her friend's words:

And I wonder, too, if Margaret would mind if you didn't arrive for tea - if you arrived about seven, perhaps?"
Mrs. McGillicuddy looked at her friend curiously.
"What's on your mind, Jane?"
"I suggest, Elspeth, that I should travel up to London with you, and that we should travel down again as far as Brackhampton in the train you travelled by the other day. You would then return to London from Brackhampton and I would come on here as you did. I, of course, would pay the fares," Miss Marple stressed this point firmly.
Mrs. McGillicuddy ignored the financial aspect.

And, strangest of all, these people were all made of china, even to their clothes, and were so small that the tallest of them was no higher than Dorothy's knee.

"Thou wilt sleep athwart the door, and guard it." In a moment more he was out of his troubles, in a deep slumber.
"Dear heart, he should have been born a king!" muttered Hendon, admiringly, "he playeth the part to a marvel."
Then he stretched himself across the door, on the floor, saying contentedly:
"I have lodged worse for seven years; "twould be but ill gratitude to Him above to find fault with this."

He dropped asleep as the dawn appeared. Toward noon he rose, uncovered his unconscious ward-a section at a time-and took his measure with a string. The king awoke, just as he had completed his work, complained of the cold, and asked what he was doing.
"'Tis done now, my liege," said Hendon; "I have a bit of business outside, but will presently return; sleep thou again-thou needest it. There-let me cover thy head also-thou"lt be warm the sooner."

Whatever's those?" asked Bunting in a low voice.
Daisy clung a thought closer to her father's arm. Even she guessed that these strange, pathetic, staring faces were the death-masks of those men and women who had fulfilled the awful law which ordains that the murderer shall be, in his turn, done to death.
"All hanged!" said the guardian of the Black Museum briefly. "Casts taken after death."

Bunting smiled nervously. "They don't look dead somehow.. They looks more as if they were listening," he said.
"That's the fault of Jack Ketch," said the man facetiously. "It's his idea - that of knotting his' patient's necktie under the left ear! That's what he does to each of the gentlemen to whom he has to act valet on just one occasion only. It makes them lean just a bit to one side. You look here - ?"

"Get out! - and if the Green Man comes, don't let me see him."
She disappeared. Rouletabille took the eggs, which had been brought to him in a bowl, and the meat which was on a dish, placed all carefully beside him in the chimney, unhooked a frying-pan and a gridiron, and began to beat up our omelette before proceeding to grill our beefsteak. He then ordered two bottles of cider, and seemed to take as little notice of our host as our host did of him. The landlord let us do our own cooking and set our table near one of the windows.

Suddenly I heard him mutter:
"Ah! - there he is."
His face had changed, expressing fierce hatred. He went and glued himself to one of the windows, watching the road. There was no need for me to draw Rouletabille's attention; he had already left our omelette and had joined the landlord at the window. I went with him.

The serious people who took him seriously never felt quite sure of his deportment; they were somehow aware that trusting their reputations for judgment with him was like furnishing a nursery with egg-shell china. He said he had seen a similar thing at Tubingen, and laid considerable stress on the blowing out of the candle. But how the trick was done he could not explain.

Gustav Klimt Painting
