force, obtained on this brute-ship. Moral suasion was a thing unknown. Picture it to yourself: a man of ordinary stature, slender of build and with weak, undeveloped muscles, who has lived a peaceful, placid life, and is unused to violence of any sort- what could such a man possibly do? There was no more reason that I should stand and face these human beasts than that I should stand and face an infuriated bull. ¡¡¡¡So I thought it out at the time, feeling the

need for vindication, and desiring to be at peace with my conscience. But this vindication did not satisfy. Nor to this day can I permit my manhood to look back upon those events and feel entirely exonerated. The situation was something that really exceeded rational formulas for conduct, and demanded more than the cold conclusions of reason. When viewed in the light of formal logic, there is not one thing of which to be ashamed, but, nevertheless, a shame rises within me at the recollection, and in the pride of my manhood I feel that my manhood has in unaccountable ways been smirched and sullied.

There was a simultaneous sigh, which created quite a little gust, as the last hope fled, and the treat was ravished from their longing lips. Scarlet with shame and anger, Amy went to and fro six dreadful times; and as each doomed couple - looking oh! so plump and juicy - fell from her reluctant hands, a shout from the street completed the anguish of the girls, for it told them that their feast was being exulted over by the little Irish children, who were their sworn foes.

This - this was too much; all flashed indignant or appealing glances at the inexorable Davis, and one passionate limelover burst into tears. ¡¡¡¡As Amy returned from her last trip, Mr. Davis gave a portentous `Hem!' and said, in his most impressive manner - `Young ladies, you remember what I said to you a week ago. I am sorry this has happened; but I never allow my rules to be infringed, and I never break my word. Miss March, hold out your hand.' ¡¡¡¡Amy started and put both hands behind her, turning on him an imploring look wh pleaded for her better than the words she could not utter. She was rather a favourite with `old Davis', as, of course, he was called, and it's my private belief that he would have broken his word if the indignation of one irrepressible young lady had not found vent in a hiss. That

"Sit down, Mr. Crackenthorpe. I understand you have just come back from the Balearics? You live out there?"
"Have done for the last six years. In Iviza. Suits me better than this dreary country."
"You get a good deal more sunshine than we do, I expect," said Inspector Craddock agreeably. "You were home not so very long ago, I understand – for Christmas, to be exact. What made it necessary for you to come back again so soon."

"Oh, we needn't put it such highbrow terms! I just like murders - Whodunnits, and all that! With a Whodunnit parked right on the family doorsteps, it seemed the chance of a lifetime. Besides, I thought poor old Em might need a spot of help – managing the old man and the police and all the rest of it."

With some dismay,I perceived that this was indeed the case. I hastily presented the strawberries to a small boy who seemed highlyastonished and faintly suspicious. Poirot added the lettuce, thus setting the seal on the child'sbewilderment. He continued to drive the moral home. "At a cheap greengrocer's-not strawberries.A strawberry, unless freshpicked,is bound to exude juice.A banana-some apples-even a cabbage-butstrawberries-""It was the first thing I thought of,"I explained by way ofexcuse.
"That is unworthy of your imagination,"returned Poirot sternly. He paused on the sidewalk. The house and shop on the right of Mrs Ascher's was empty.A "TO LET"signappeared in the windows. On the other side was a house with somewhat grimymuslin curtains. To this house Poirot betook himself and, there being no bell, executed aseries of sharp flourishes with the knocker. The door was opened after some delay by a very dirty child with a nosethat needed attention. "Good evening,"said Poirot."Is your mother within?" "Ay?"said the child.

The four travelers walked with ease through the trees until they came to the farther edge of the wood. Then, to their surprise, they found before them a high wall which seemed to be made of white china. It was smooth, like the surface of a dish, and higher than their heads.
"What shall we do now?" asked Dorothy.
"I will make a ladder," said the Tin Woodman, "for we certainly must climb over the wall."
While the Woodman was making a ladder from wood which he found in the forest Dorothy lay down and slept, for she was tired by the long walk. The Lion also curled himself up to sleep and Toto lay beside him.
The Scarecrow watched the Woodman while he worked, and said to him:
"I cannot think why this wall is here, nor what it is made of."
"Rest your brains and do not worry about the wall," replied the Woodman. "When we have climbed

The boon was granted, as your majesty knoweth; and there hath been no time, these four hundred years, that that line has failed of an heir; and so, even unto this day, the head of that ancient house still weareth his hat or helm before the king's majesty, without let or hindrance

By his own request, our small friend was now conducted to his private cabinet, and left there alone to his own devices. Hanging upon hooks in the oaken wainscoting were the several pieces of a suit of shining steel armor, covered all over with beautiful designs exquisitely inlaid in gold. It's here we keeps an account of what he's done, his previous convictions, and so on. His finger-tips are where I told you, and his record in there - just connected by a number."
Wonderful!" said Bunting, drawing in his breath. But Daisy was longing to get on - to get to the Black Museum. All this that Joe and her father were saying was quite unreal to her, and, for the matter of that not worth taking the trouble to understand. However, she had not long to wait.

Art Painting He was a tidy man, was the lodger; he did not throw his things about as so many gentlemen do, leaving them all over the place. No, he kept everything scrupulously tidy. His clothes, and the various articles Mrs. Bunting had bought for him during the first two days he had been there, were carefully arranged in the chest of drawers.

He had lately purchased a pair of boots. Those he had arrived in were peculiar-looking footgear, buff leather shoes with rubber soles, and he had told his landlady on that very first day that he never wished them to go down to be cleaned.
A funny idea - a funny habit that, of going out for a walk after midnight in weather so cold and foggy that all other folk were glad to be at home, snug in bed. But then Mr. Sleuth himself admitted that he was a funny sort of gentleman.

A good fire was blazing in the chimney, and we held our hands to the warmth it sent out; it was a morning in which the approach of winter was unmistakable.

Art Painting

Gustav Klimt two girls with an oleander Painting

Gustav Klimt two girls with an oleander Painting
